Just getting getting back into ocean waters again out East and hauled in a 48" Rock (aka bass). Now I'm wet wading for the big one in the Shenandoah Park & the Shenandoah River on less adventurous days with fly gear! These waters are great, but I miss Santa Cruz's Royal Gorge and the steelhead dad used to pull out. Say hi to the old man and I'll pass on hellow to Harry Murray in Eddinburg, VA. thanks Jeff

Hello fellow anglers, Hi Ernie! I may be travelling through Los Padres/Ventana Wilderness and would love to wet a line in obscure waters for wild trout. Specifically information on the A***o S***o and the S***n A***o R***r. Feel free to contact me off the board. No need to divulge secret spots just point me roughly in the right direction. I am a CnR fly fisherman. Cheers, Bernard

are there any fish wives out there? evidently the steelhead fishing is all up north( smith river) and there is no shopping to be had, just what are we to do, just let them buy more fish stuff or what? he fished the san lorenzo years ago, and now we take these long fishing trips up north to the smith river which is so pretty but the trip is very long, he does get great a fish or two....those steelhead are a trick to land..you can not beat that for excitement!the happy fish wife

Hey Ernie, hey Diane.Hey all fishermen addicts!my name is alex. i'm 12 and I love your web site and your store, i try to get down there at least once a week.soquel creek and bates creek are in my backyard, but bates doesn't have any fish that i know of.i try to fish any chance i gey.anyway, thank you so much for all your help on tying flies. I hope you like the ones I gave you.in my room i have a desk with feathers of all sorts, my vice, and all kinds of other materials and tools. It takes up at least a quarter of my room. I remember the first time walked down to your store with nick near the end of 2000..you helped us out so much, we went to the baglery and then went home and started working right away to make money for our first rod and flies.i remember my first fly fishing trip.It was to dinkey creek.Dinkey Creek is a very well hidden creek.only few people know about the campground and not even 10 people know about this secret trail we took to get down there.it was real short like a mile and a half but i havent been there since i was 5 so the whole trail is overgrown and we always leave to late and end up climbing down the trail at night, and setting up camp at night.once you get down there there's no picnic benches or anything.all there is it a sandy section for sleeping and a campfire ring. once we woke up, we packed a back pack and headed up stream to the gorge. thats were the best fishing is.it's about 3 quarters a mile to get to a humongus hole we call the lake.from there on up you head into the gorge.now i havent fished many rivers, so i dont know if every stream is like this, but there is trout and holes every were. for the gorge area you need a rope to get of the large boulders.each time you climb up one, there is a beautiful hole on the other side.giant granite boulders, huge pine trees, and gint 10-19 inch trout.there are browns, rainbows, and brookies. and there are no stocked fish.all beautiful, wild trout.our fit day trout fishing once we got into the gorge we caught 8 fish.Since it was july we went swiming. it wasn't to cold, but cold enought to keep the fish alive.the next day we hiked up int the gorge and caught 3 fish. on the way back we caught 2 more.once we got back we aterice and peanut butter sandwiches. we to a 30 minute nap under shade from a giant willow. then we went swimming again.downstream where we were camping the swimming was much better.the water was deeper and there were 15 foot boulders we could jump off of.then we had trout and macaroni and cheese for dinner and went to bed.the next morning we packed up sleeping bags and such and hiked out.once we got up to the car we immidiately ran to a creek on the side if the road to cool off.we got our Sobes that we left in the car and drank them. they were surprisingly cool.the second time we went up there we were thinking of going to florence lake at almost 7000 ft, which is just 45 minutes op the road.i went to there wedsite to chech it out. it looked like they had great fishinmg but we wouldn't have as much fishing time, but it looked very pretty.popular fishing areas up there are the san joaquin river,Mono creek, florence lake, Edison lake,Ward lake,Mono lake, jackass meadows, and Mono meadow.next time we are thinking if trout fishing we will go up there.fishing conditions are terible in the bay area. it's not suposed to rain for at least 10 days,so there should be some great fithing in 2-3 days.the bniggest steel head i ever caught was 15 inches, but that was my first year and i sucked at fishing.some good flies that work aroun the bay area are muddler minnows, skunks and green butt skunks, bosses, comets, wooly buggers, and any color matucka.well, adios amigos.Great fishing to all.

So you can't keep the fish anymore from the San Lorenzo? Catch and release only, are the fish stocks in that bad a shape that there isn't even a reasonable harvest allowed? Wow, I grew up in S Crz, we used to fish Butano Creek, Wilder Creek, & San Vicente Creek in Davenport, Branciforte Creek, and the River, opening day was a zoo in the river especially at the mouth near the trestle, shoulder to shoulder, on the bank and in the water. Used to be quite a few fish to, never wasted them, but always took legal sized fish home to eat. By the time I moved away from S Crz in 1987 the fishing was poor and most of the north coast creeks were off limits to all fishing, to bad those little creeks were some of the best fishing ever! Hey Ernie, I remember you from the United Cigar Agency, before you moved down Pacific Ave to the new store, boy I'm getting old......... I'll have to check out your new store in Soquel, (guess it's not so new anymore). Catching lots of trout up here in Colorado near the continental divide, some as big as those SLR fish in the good old days, caught me a 16.5 lb 35" Mack on a 1/4 oz gold kastmaster, 4lb test, G. Loomis 6' ultralight rod. Hour and a half to land the bugger. Most of them are much smaller, 16" is a good fish. Living right on the upper Arkansas River, a fantastic brown trout river. This is fishing like the old days in Santa Cruz, lots of fish, and very few fisherman up in the high country.

Hello Ernie, I bought my first fly rod from you in the summer of 1995 it was a 9'- 5-6wt. Powell 2 pc. I had the rod up untill last summer when I sold it and bought a Powell 8 1/2' 5wt 2pc from Doug at Fishermans Merc on Rock creek in Montana. I used to come down after work and buy fly tying materials from you. I learned how to tie flys from your encourahgement, from the Santa Cruz Flyfishing club at the library in Soquel. I moved to Bend Or. shortly after those first few classes. I then bought Randall Kaufmanns books on tying drys and nymphs and my fly tying has never slowed down. I now have tied flys professionally for the Fly Box, Wiliamson River anglers, the Patient Angler, and Numb Butt Fly Fishing for My Good friend Merril Hummer. THank you ERnie for having the patience to turn me into a trout Fishing bum. If you had not been so kind, I never would have boughten that first Powell fly rod from you. And I stil would be living in Santa cruz, instead of chasing big Deschutes river Redsides during the Salmon Fly hatch and Chromie's in October only in my dreams, after reading about some other lucky guy doing those things from magazine articles. I hope that all is going well for you. Bye the way have you been back to Rock creek? It has been dam good fishing around the Micro-burst area the past seven years. Take care sincerley Warren D. Snyder

I have been to your website a ton of times, and it's a great place to exchange information on the local streams and who is doing what. I also wanted to mention thanks to Richard Guidotti of Salinas, who introduced me to the San Lorenzo River about 10 years ago. Mr. Guidotti, your kindness in taking me to the river and showing me how to fish it will never be forgotten, especially since I have been fishing the San Lorenzo every year since then. And sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to fish it during your times on the river, when the steelhead were stacked up, and it wasn't uncommon to see a 15lb steelhead. Hope to see you at the Rincon or the Garden some day . . . cheers old friend of mine . . .

I can remember the late 60's & early 70's when Aptos & Soquel creeks were thick with chromers, those fish would keep my brother Mike & I out from early AM into the dark hours. We would start at the cabin hole, & end up at the steel bridge in Nisene Marks. Nothing but fun, it was not uncommon to have a twenty to thirty fish day if you were the first to drift an egg through the spot of your choice. On killer days we would hook-up every cast, back then a single egg worked best with a small shot. We got so tired of opening the egg jar every cast, that I started putting the eggs in my mouth so it would cut down on non productive fishing time. My brother saw that I was hooking more fish than him because I was in the water way more than he was, so he started mouthing the eggs. You know what is really sick?, we started liking the taste. We used to live on Stephens Dr. on the Rio Flats way back when, so the creek was in our yard, it made it pretty easy to cut school & fish all day. Mom always wondered why we always came home from school wet????????????? When we left the Cruz, the fish were no more thanks to the drought years we had, I'm glad to see that the fishing has made a turn around for the good. Now I'm up in Sacramento with the American River in my yard, which I fish almost year-round, there are only a couple of months of dead time, but there are many other rivers within an hour that you can get your fix from. Now it's time for the big Feather & Yuba Chromers, they have made there presence known. Hi to all my old fishing croonies that I havn't seen for years, Phil Hayes, Mark Mattern, It's been awhile.

Ernie, great web site--we haven't met, but I believe you watched reel in a 10lb plus female hatchery fish down by the bridge. I let her go, this was on a Saturday--I went back Sunday and caught a 6lb wild buck--also let him go. They were both very fresh fish, this was about two weeks agpo. I wished everybody would release the steelhead (wild/hatchery) in this small river. thx roger

I admit, I'm an addict to fishing! I am currently in need of a river salmon fix (very soon!). Introduced to CA salmon in 1993 (thanks Brent) I now travel to the Feather regularly during the season from Santa Cruz (4 hours each way!). Now with a boat I am ready for FUN! I am always exploring new places/species to fish: Sac river salmon, stripers, delta stripers, feather or Sac river shad... Flood my e-mail with suggestions. Hey, Ernie is a great guy, he gave me a handdrawn map of "hot spots" in Santa Cruz once. Thanks Ernie.

Hi folks! Hope all is well with you and yours! I was surfin'the web and I came across your site,so Ithought I'd log on and tell you about the great fishing we're enjoying up here in the "tierra de Las Plumas" The Feather is currently flowing at 7,000 cfs below the outlet and the Shad are starting to show! A few spring run Chinooks are also being caught! The best news is the great Steelhead fishing that is here!we,ve been catching fish to 6lbs.on Caddis flies and nymphs in the low flow section of the Feather. A good stick can expect to hook 8-10 of these summer runs, and bring 5-6 to hand! Thanks for Refferals. C.B.

Hey Ernie, I remember you from the Old United Cigar Store on Pacific Avenue. Left Santa Cruz 12 years ago but haven't quit fishing, just new places, currently on a government contract overseas, great fishing on coral reefs! Glad to hear the San Lorenzo still has fish in it. It was looking pretty bad in the late 60s and 70s. Is opening day still a zoo in the lagoon by the railroad trestle? I'll have to stop by your shop when in town. Great Site!

Ernie: Can't believe I find my hometown shop via Lefty Krey's site! Too many days on the stream I guess. Looks great! No offense but I just never expected to find you online. Striper fishing at Oneill Forebay has been of epic proportions this past fall and well into this year with lots of topwater action. We had a slow spell during that super high pressure period in December, but as the rain started to fall, the Stripers came back to the flats averaging 20-36inches with a few bigger fish now and then. Best patterns have been Dave's Sheep Smelt (Chart over white)and San Luis Swine Baits (Muddler/Deceiver all black) sizes #2 - #4 on both to match the average size of the smelts in the rez. Last two weeks have been good, especially during the fronts in the rain. No crowds, no weeds and lots of fish! Great to see you online and will stop by the shop soon.

Do you think the steelheads would go for banana slugs, when all the lures have been snagged and cut off? (No way I'm trying flyfishing, when I'm still trying to get the hang of knots.)

Back from my trip to the Trinity and Chetco. Had a great time on the Trinity, Started fishing at Big Bar and ended up at "Hell Hole" above the big flat area. Didn't see any Steelhead but caught a lot of Salmon from 5# up to about 12#. Many taged fish, one with $10.00 reward. Most were caught on roe, but did catch a few on spoons. The Chetco wasn't right for me on this trip, not many fish and a lot of fishermen and fisherwomen. There were fish caught to 40# while I was there. Will need to build a better Pram for the return trip.

See you then!

I'm new here in town but with a few hours on my hands I spent some time in downtown santa cruz on a footbridge overlooking the river. It was early in the morning and steelhead and perhaps coho? smolts were rising like mad. Hundreds of fish from 3-7 or 8 inches rolling and nosing. Whata site. I just sat mesmerized. Hopefully we'll get a fraction of that many returning up the river and I'll have a great winter.

Hello Ernie........I've had quite a few fishing trips and all were very successfull, but the one trip that really stands out in my mind is with my father. We had quite a hike to get in to the lake but well worth it.We paddled across one small lake and then it was an all up hill battle from there with no clear trail to follow but we both knew where the lake was.I packed the canoe on my back and my dad carried the gear.......(wasn't much cause we both knew what kind of a hike we were in for). The lake was situated on top of a mountain and needless to say we were both very glad to get there and not looking forward to the trip back down.Anyways,we fished all day and nothing was biting accept the 4lb-3oz speckle trout and a 5lb-14oz speckle trout. They were the only two fish we got but man it sure was exciting to catch those two beauties. My father ,now passed away for two years, really enjoyed the outdoors and thanks to him and my mom, they got all 7 of us kids...(now in my mid thirties)enjoying the outdoors also.We all love fishing as well as hunting.I leave for my moose hunting trip on Sept.12 for one week which I hope it will be successful again. It is a 12hr drive for me to where the rest of my family lives....(White River Ontario Canada).I live in Kitchener Ontario.Well I have to make a list of the gear I need for the hunt and will let you know if we got a moose or two. Bye for now.......Brian

Hello all. Finally got to the West coast of Ireland for 4 days of salmon fishing in late July. We had awful weather with sideways rain and the river high and fast for the whole week. Caught one small (4 pound) salmon and a few browns and seatrout (also small, less than a pound). It was great to be fishing, though. I could get used to that fancy fishing on reserved beats with a ghillie and luxury accommodations if it wasn't so darned expensive. See you the 3rd. week in October.

I'm planning an April trip to the Bahamas with a true fishing buddy and we're in the process of the necessary upgrades to our gear, including purchases of Bauer M-4 reels. Any comments. I'm also looking for the "perfect" reel for my 6 1/2' 2 wt rod. Recommendations?

Hi Ernie, I am Ralph Mitchell's son living in Minnesota. I inherited a fly rod from dad, a Sage 10 weight graphite. Is that one you made for him? I am planning a trip to S.C. in January, 1998 and want to get in some steelhead fishing. I just found your website today. Great job. It looks like this is not a hot year for steelheading. Can you recommend a good date for my trip? I fish the Root River in Racine, WI for salmon and steelhead. Wooly buggers and dark flies generally are the best along with yarn flies of various colors. Will these types of flies work in San Lorenzo/Soquel. When I lived there everyone used fresh roe mostly, maybe some globugs. What do you recommend?

Hello to all of you Kinzlis from Brussells, Belgium. Things are great with the single exception of NO fishing in 1997...too busy travelling...Czech. Republic, Spain, England, Ireland and all over Belgium and Northern France. Next year I've got some trips planned to the UK for trout and salmon, though. Happy holidays and don't sell everything. I'm coming back eventually

Hi Ernie, It´s wonderful to read your fine homepage. I'm from Denmark, you know the wonderful little country in Scandinavia. We have a lot of good fishing here, first of all after big sea trout. I'll be visiting California in feb.'98. Hope to find some nice waters there too Henrik Lomholt, Denmark

Hey Ernie, I enjoyed reading about your Montana trip. I hope to make it out that way some day. I live in Omaha so fly fishing for trout involves a rather long drive no matter where I go! I mangae to get up to southern Minnesota a few times a year to fish the Root river and maybe a couple of trips to western Wisconsin hitting the Kinnie and Rush rivers. Keep up the good work, eh! Hi Ernie, I really injoy your Web page. I have found that your Steelhead reports and links are very useful. I always heard about the Steelhead in the small rivers and creeks in the Santa Cruz area but never fished them. Last season I decided to give them a try. Well thanks to your Steelhead page I had some fun times. You can visit my Web site at http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/~ernst/ernstwebpage.html Check out the photo album.. I'll plan to stop by to say hi and check out your fly fishing shop. Thanks, Dave Ernst

Just browsing the Net for flyfishing sites...and saw a link to your page. I live in Eureka and have been a flyfisher for over forty years. My parents lived in Soquel for some time (before WWII) and moved to Eureka due, primarily, to the great flyfishing in the area at the time. One of these days, while visiting relatives around Soquel, I'll stop by your shop and say hello

I'm an ex-local living up in Boise ID. When I have a couple of hours to kill I'll cruise to the Middle Fork of the Boise and wet my line. Lately there has been an on-going blue winged hatch. When the hatch is off PT's have done the trick. If I remember correctly the steelhead run on the San Lorenzo River & Soquel Creek run for a couple more weeks, hopefully El Nino has not changed the run. Good luck.

Hi Ernie ...I was just looking at your Stealhead report from last year. Looks like there was some good fishing to be had. I would like to see more on the fly fishing in your area.I grew up in Aptos but did not take up fly fishing until I moved to South Lake Tahoe. Now I am guiding most of the waters from the East Walker in Bridgeport to the Truckee. It's great to have a local (if I can consider Soquel to be local; I live in Saint Helena, CA) web site. Would appreciate fly pattern listings and any local (Napa Valley) fly fishing info can you get, as to where to go. Mainly ponds, etc. Planning a one week trip to the Mckenzie River in Oregon for the week of July 6, 1997. This will be the third year we have gone here at about the same time. My wife, Jan, and I meet up with my cousin and her husband, along with four other friends at the Cedarwood Lod ge in Mckenzie Bridge, OR, each year. The Lodge is on the river, and all nine cabins have a river view. Three of us hire the same guide each year and go out in a Mckenzie boat, what else, each day to fish. A great time is had by all. Will log on after this year's trip and file a report. budberg@napanet.net

Hi Ernie: Although the timing was terrible (i.e. after the end of the steelhead season), hope you saw your store mentioned in the Spring issue of Wild Steelhead and Salmon. I told you I'd put you in there, but sorry about the timing. Anyway, hope it helps out with business. Hope all is well with you and family. With my pending divorce, and the tough weather, not much of a steelhead season for me this year. I fished mostly the Garcia and South Fork Eel, but little activity. Looking forward to next season. My parents moved from Capitola to San Diego, but I'll still be stopping by, and always look forward to seeing you. Your Friend, John.

Great Page Ernie, Here in South Africa fly fishing is one of the fastest growing sports, What with Trout,Bass, giant Carp,Kurper,Yellowfish,Tigerfish fish And Huge Barbel all accepting flies with glee it has to be. We are very lucky to also have excellent salt water fishing, but we are only starting to realise the full potential of monsters lurking in the salt waiting for a well presented bunch of feathers. Guys and Girls down here in South Africa we are spoilt. Perfect weather and even more perfect fish. World keep well and Ill let you know of ny next catch, my most recent being a hard fighting 5lb Rainbow Caught at Dullstroom in our eastern parts. Now Im off Hunting a 20lb Carp. Tight Lines all

I was hard up to do some where. I am going to McCumber 2/20,so I will let you know how that turns out. It has been very productive for me in past winters. Take the long johns. Doug

Hello Ernie, I've been to your shop a few times over the years. My brother lives up the street by the Winery. Anyway, it's great to check the web for your update. I'll be planning my business trips now by with how the rivers are looking. I've had some great days on th e San Lorenzo, and Soquel creek. More great times than fish, but that's what fly fishing is all about.

Sounds like I'll have to give Santa Cruz Co. steelhead fishing a try-- didn't know there were fly fishing opportunities so close to home (Los Gatos). I suppose Glo Bugs are the safest bet? How about dries?

Good to see you have a web site. I have not done much fly-fishing in past few years. I don't have the equipment yet. I do have an old bamboo rod (leonard tournament) that I probably should not fish with. Is there any place to fish around the central coast area anyway?

I have been fishing for steelhead 15 years and 10 of it on the San larenzo. I live in Fremont and quite often wonder as to the river conditions and/or if there are any fish. Your web page is exactly what I've been sourching for; info. on local rivers. I hope to go soon and again, your updates will help tremendously. Thanks, Mike...

Thanks for the latest fishing updates on your Web page. I think its great. Good news regarding the San Lorenzo. I fished it a week ago (1/12) in the heavy colored water with moderate success. I released a 8 1/2 lb. buck. I also hooked four other fish in the 10 lb. class. I also had four other fishermen witness one of the biggest fish they had seen on the San Lorenzo. All said the fish was in the 18 to 20 lb. class. It was an exciting battle while it lasted. The fish hit on roe and yarn. It took several hard runs in a deep pole, then it went to the air.The fish finally jumped into some raging white water where it twisted and turned and the hook popped out its mouth. All fishermen including myself were giving high fives and thumbs up to the stud fish. It was a beautiful buck with just a hint of pink on its sides. Thanks again for your Web page Chuck Pomeroy

In the fall I'll have another article in Fly Fisherman on the Trinity. Last weekend, me, Zenner, and another guy hooked some nice fish on the Mad, although we are not prone to admitting that we do fish that river. It was the only river in CA that was fishable. I hate to use this as a usenet deal but... can anybody tell me the lengths and thicknesses for tying my own leaders? I have seen the formulas several times but they are never readily available when I have the time to do it. I am aiming for Brown trout in medium speed rivers and bass in lakes. Bluegills are my all-time favorite for lake fly-fishing. They are good for my ego because they are painfully easy to catch on almost any dry fly but don't waste your time filleting them. :-) Toss 'em back. I like to check under my canoe before I move to see how many I've caught. They school up right under the boat after being released. Oh yeah, I'm using a 6 weight Cabella's (4-piece) with floating double taper for trout and a rocket taper for bass. The big small mouth bass in N. Idaho really go for slow twitched pike flies. Bead eyes are great. (Just a tip in case you go). Thanks for any help, -DLB
