Michael - probably the only possibilities on the SLR for spey casting are down at the mouth of the river (between the railroad bridge there at the Boardwalk and the Riverside Street bridge). The river is pretty narrow and there is not much clearance behind for most of the rest of the access.

Brad W. <spanishdancer_bula@yahoo.com> -- 12/31/01 -- 14:01:05 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.77 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U)

NL (Nick) the river was running at 350-375 cfs Sunday morning, visibility was less than a foot. Not very good for flies & lures, but roe and other bait works just fine, you just need to find the spots where the water velocity isn't too fast and you can feel a bite. I've seen fish caught at up to 700 cfs (just don't try to cross at these flow rates!).

Brad, I'm suprised you didn't get washed down river!!!

Michael Freeman <Michael.Freeman@amxygen.com> -- 12/31/01 -- 09:34:23 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0)

Hello all. Is there a particular stretch on the SLR that would lend itself to a spey rod and swinging flies. I've had fun at Pescadero (single hand striping nymphs) going after half-pounders but it sounds as though you guys to the south may have yourselves a more substantial thing goin' on. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Brad W. <spanishdancer_bula@yahoo.com> -- 12/30/01 -- 14:01:50 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.77 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U)

Fished the San Lorenzo Sunday morning. Tried 4 Rocks first, got a couple of hand sized fish in the tail of the pool. Tried the next pool down also, all I caught was a tree. Then tried the falls pool, only managed to break my rod on a snag (good thing it's got a warantee!). Went back to my car and got my other rod and went down to the Cascades - nothing. Maybe next weekend?

Just checked SLR, Water is rising and starting to muddy up.. Tomarrow will be o.k. Sunday will be blown out..If we get enough of a break in the Rain,Tues. and Wed., might be good..These storms schould bring up a fresh run of fish..Just gotta find EM'.

After reading these reports on Ernie's site for 2 seasons now, I finally had an opportunity to fish the San Lorenzo yesterday. Actually, I've tried twice before for just a couple hours each during bad conditions so I consider yesterday my first "real" trip. There were lots of people on the river. I fished the garden in the morning (nothing), then went to 4-rock (zip) and then returned to the garden. I was fishing with a chrome flatfish when my 8'6" pole doubled over. Nothwithstanding a lot of pressure and a fairly tight drag, the fish took me down 2 or 3 little waterfalls but I managed to keep the tension so the barbless hooks wouldn't slip out. Finally, after 20 minutes or so (?), the fish was landed (thanks Tad). The fish was a hatchery buck that measured 32". An onlooker guessed it to be in the 8-10lb range. Thanks to all you guys for the advice you have given on this site and via email. Best fishing day ever.

Hello all, Took my first scouting of the SLR around Cowell's this past weekend. What a wonderful place. Watching the weather forecast, looks like there is a lot of rain headed this way this weekend. I read through a lot of the previous posts on rain - a lot of prayers going on at times! Can someone give me the goods on how the Sierra rivers react to rain and how it affects fishing here? Thanks, Dan

Hey, hooked my first big SLR steelhead Sunday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon. Lost three good fish. First two felt like solid snags, but then the fish took off on long runs, the third jumped clear of the water before breaking off. 30" and maybe 8lbs. Two out of Wall hole, the third in the little hole just above Rincon. Two on black Woolley Buggers, one on a pink egg pattern. wednesday fished for 3 hours without a strike.

Sheri, the local streams in Santa Cruz County are closed to trout fishing in the summer time, they are only open to steelhead fishing (Nov. 16th - End of Feb.). If you're looking for trout fishing in the Santa Cruz area, then the only spots are Loch Lomond, Pinto Lake, and perhaps a few smaller lakes. You might want to consider Putah Creek, it's got some good trout fishing, even in the winter time. You can call us at the shop if you like, or stop by, and we can give you some information about it...

I'm new to this area and I'm looking for someone to show me where to fish within an hour's drive of Sunnyvale, Ca. I'm interested mostly in flyfishing for trout and prefer streams over still water.

Fished SLR 12/19..two small egg eaters and one decent fish that was only hooked up breifly...Took a peek at Pescadero and San Grigorio...both blown out but may be fishable at this time...BTW the no net rule goes for these countys..Mendocino,Monterey,San Luis Obispo,San Mateo,Santa Clara,Santa Cruz and Sanoma..There is no exscuse, but I think it's an honest mistake that some make and should be put in the "body of water/open season and special reg" section of the reg book to avoid confusion..merry xmas!!

I fished Tennis hole and got five fish. Nothing over 19". Yarn and crawler combo. Saw a five pounder landed on roe. Also fished Soquel and Pajaro. Not much there. Anyone tried Carmel. Uvas is going to be great in a week.

I'm one of the guilty newcomers to SLR sporting a landing net 12/15 and 12/19. (See the post by D&J -- 12/21/01) I hooked on the landing net out of habit, having no idea it was illegal (and having no intention of 'taking' any fish). I had reviewed the DFG regulations and hadn't spotted anything about landing nets on the San Lorenzo. Somebody please point out the reg on landing nets, so I don't miss something like that next time. Thanks, Brooke

Although I am sure someone has caught steelhead all about river levels, in my experience, about 400 cf/sec is pretty hopeless. I think the fish get hunkered down in these conditions and don't risk getting out in the current. The forecast is for more rain tonight, I'm betting the river will be blown out for the weekend.

1st timer on your page. Looking forward to many opertunities this year in my back yard. We have landed on Lazywood rd. (just up the SLV from the high school) moved in late last year never had a chance to tie on a fly. Saw a couple guys wading the river opening day, but things looked pretty muddy to me. Only question I have is what pattern / streamer should I be drifting to get that 10 pounder to respond? I'll keep all posted on this years results. River was raging this a.m. hopefully it will slow a bit & "green up" for Sat./ Sun. a.m.

J <J1BIGFISH@AOL.COM> -- 12/21/01 -- 12:34:05 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; AOL 7.0; Windows 98; sureseeker.com)

I looked at the flow chart that was given below. How much is too much flow to fish? I hope I will be able to go out saturday. I read alot of post about the rincon area. where is this place? I usually go to the garden of eden area. also would you guys suggest going up or down stream from the garden. Thanks Guys

Mike <bolte@cruzio.com> -- 12/20/01 -- 13:29:28 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.76 [en] (X11; U; SunOS 5.7 sun4u)

For you folks who live far away (or anyone else) you can check the river level/flow rate here: http://water.usgs.gov/ca/nwis/uv/?site_no=11160500 100 cf/sec is a nice level, it is fishable down to 30 cf/sec and above 150 cf/sec is alot of water.

Todd <luchette@mac.com> -- 12/20/01 -- 09:05:58 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.12; Mac_PowerPC)

Just hooked my first adult at San Lorenzo and I've been fishing for over 5 years. Okay, I'm not the best steelhead angler, but it's not an easy river. I'd say it was easily 9+ lbs., every bit as big as the northern rivers. Snapped me off like nobody's business.

NL <echig@hotmail.com> -- 12/20/01 -- 08:00:43 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98)

Kid, I hooked that same fish or it's twin in the sand hold. Took me on a freight train ride for about a minute before it broke off. No kidding about that 10+ pound guess. At no point did I have control of that thing. What a blast!!!

JD <jimmydigitd@hotmail.com> -- 12/19/01 -- 18:32:06 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98; DigExt)

Props to the kid as well!! Of course I decided to fish along the coast today and miss what sounds like good chromer action. I'm still thawing out from the wicked cold winds. Thanks for the updates everyone.

Ben Lomond Kid <jeffwinter66@earthlink.net> -- 12/19/01 -- 17:55:44 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Mac_PowerPC)

Another great day.started at four rock with a few egg eaters.and saw 2 nice fish hooked, in the eight pound range..fished down to the wall hole and hooked 5 pound hatchery buck and a couple more egg eaters..then fished up to the garden, not getting a single bite for 2 hours..then jumped up to water marker and landed a 10 pound wild hen..(full of roe) all released!!! My buddy also hooked a fish in the 10 pound range in the upper sand hole. there's 3 and 4 year olds now in the river up to 10+ pounds

Scott <scotkatr@scvwd.dst.ca.us> -- 12/19/01 -- 17:27:23 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)

Fine Oh Lee! It finally happened! Both my buddy and I hooked into the real thing for the first time and we're still flying high. Fished the Rincon area and had on 2 fish each, only landing one which was in the 2 lb. range. 2 were bright chrome and well over 5 lbs. Thank you to those of you that post updates and river conditions, it has helped me many times.

wednesday morning report. The river was a little lower and clearer than I expected, but in great shape nevertheless. But, no steelhead for me this morning in the RIncon area. I put on a little beadhead Prince nymph just before leaving and caught a couple 8" rainbows.

Checked out SLR today (12-18-01) at around noon.. water is perfect!!! Med/Low Flow ,with that greenish color we all love so much...about 3 feet of visibilty and clearing.. We got almost an inch of rain sun.night and mon. morning.. Just enough to keep a good flow of water..I LOVE WEDNESDAYS

Ron <sanlorenzoriver@hotmail.com> -- 12/17/01 -- 09:17:40 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 4.0)

Fish Sunday morning from the Garden down to the Wall. The water was a smidge high and off color, but nothin. Water not clearing like it used to after heavy rain. Possibly more recent land/bank slide activity up stream? Any word on that? Anyway, for those of you going out this Wednesday, please post your report. Sounds like there is a good presence of fish (and rain) for December.

Thanks to Andy who found my rod and called me. Unfortunately it fell off my truck in the intersection of Hwy 1 and Hwy 9 where he found it - after a whole bunch of cars had rolled over it. I appreciate knowing that its soul is resting comfortably. Anyone know where I can get a used Pflueger 1494? I have lots of spools but "Flooger" doesn't make the reels anymore. I'm busy making a new rod out of a blank I've had for several years.

Doug, the Garden of Eden is a pretty good way up river from the Rincon area. Usually it is accessed not from the Rincon fire road turnout, but rather from a big turnout and dirt road a mile or so before getting to the entrance to Henry Cowell Park when driving from Santa Cruz to Felton on Highway 9. Follow the dirt road down to the railroad track, turn right (down river) and follow the tracks till a little sign at a clear trailhead points you to the Garden. It is a beautiful spot. Mike

Fished Rincon Road vicinity with roe 6:30-9:30. One juvenile and one hatchery egg eater about 15". No one seemed to be having much luck and there were plenty of folks there. The egg eater had a dark red splotch about the size of a penny on it's side about 3" forward from the tail. Anyone know if this is a disease (it seemed otherwise healthy) or maybe a sign that it's ready to spawn?

Fished Lagoon (dry line, burlaps etc) wed morning (pre-dawn until 7:30am) on a falling tide, with no luck. River looked great but LOW (even at a relatively high low tide)! Headed up to court house hole and fished glo bugs. Again nothing. Have they all headed upstream?

I'v been making long drives up to the Feather for some good fishing..But I would like to fish water a bit closer to home(san jose). If anyone would be so kind to show me around the SLR or any other streems localy I would be more than happy to try to put them on some stipers , Largemouth or North Delta smallies ...I fish the big lake and the forbay also from a very comfortable newer bass boat..what ever they want at my expense!! when the conditions are good or fish are on...NOT LOOKING FOR SOMEONES FAVORITE HOLES..just some general direction and ideas..I want to find my own fish but would like to spend a day with someone that knows the river and how to get around the area(roads)..I gear fish for steelhead but wouldn't mind tagging along with a fly caster..please catch and release. Thanks for any help. Dave

Fished Rincon, Wall and Sand Holes Saturday morning and despite near perfect conditions didn't catch anything. It was as crowded as I've seen the river, but only saw one fish caught (16" steelhead). Does anyone know how a big blowout like the river had Sunday affects the fishing? It peaked above 6000 cubic feet/second early Sunday morning.

11/28/01 My first trip to the SLR this season. I went to Pogonip. Water very low and putting a toe in the water released a cloud of silt. Nothing but 6-8 inch silver fry - I should have looked closer at them as they might have been coho smolts. I NEED HELP FINDING MY ROD! I got an upsetting cell phone call about construction on our house and drove off with my rod on top of the truck. It must have fallen close to the Pogonip parking place. Anyway, it is an 8 footer with metallic green wraps trimmed with metallic silver and it has my name on it, since I made it. Has a beat-up Pflueger 1494 on it. If you found it or see it please call me at 408-52-2145. Reward, of course. Lou

I was at Scott Creek on Sunday afternoon. Many small rainbows which took a beadhead nymph and an Adams. No big hits for me, but I did see one good Steelhead taken on a polar shrimp. A dad and a young boy about 7 or 8 years old had the good luck. I think the boy was thrilled to fight the fish, and the dad carefully released it. Good lessons all around.

caught 6 small fish (8" - 12") on #12 beadhead nymphs and dry flies. One was solid silver, the others were rainbows I guess. Not much color and large dark circles on their sides. Anybody know the story here? I thought that steelhead were sea-run rainbows and the silver color was for the fish who had spent time in the ocean and returned to the river.

Mouth is (and has been intermittently) open. Unfortunately, someone has seen fit to bring a bobcat in late at night (and illegaly) numerous times over the last few months and opened the mouth to drain the river. From everything I have heard from local fisheries biologists, the lagoon formed by the mouth closing during the summer months is extremely important as rearing habitat and anyone opening the mouth is in violation of both state and federal laws. If there were, in fact, many fish in the lagoon this summer, one can only imagine the effects of opening the mouth and letting the water fall several feet in a few hours, with nowhere for the fish to go (certainly not upstream). Apparently the city is stumped and does not know who is responsible. Fish in the river: I looked at the "buckeye hole" on Friday and today and did not see evidence of fish (though water is a little discolored now). Upper river has fish in MANY pods numbering a dozen fish or more with some appearing MUCH larger than 12 inches. I watched fish in the upper gorge on saturday rolling and jumping out of the water (mayfly hatch). Great to see but the water is very low. Water also looks great in sycamore grove but there are MANY homeless camps right on the river banks...more than I have ever seen there. Lots of garbage and of course you know what. Really disturbing, especially since I was there with my 2 year old. I also heard the 'founder' of the "Camp Paradise" encampment has several CDFG violations. Anyone know how widespread poaching is? Good luck to all on Friday.

Wow - we are falling down as local fisher people with Ernie's board here. Jeremy - there is good steelhead fishing in the San Lorenzo. The season starts Nov 15 and ends at the end of February. Fishing on open and closing days, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and some holidays. You can catch steelhead pretty much from the mouth of the river down by the Boardwalk all the way up past Felton. There are good access points at `Rincon fireroad' a few miles up highway 9, and in Henry Cowell park. Stop in at Ernie's and you might be able to talk him out of one of his marvelous maps of the river that show all the named holes. I have tried FF at New Brighton Beach and off the jetties at the harbor but never had much luck (some bass). Just my own incompetence I suspect. Good luck, Mike

Hi, I'm new to the area and would love to get into some Santa Cruz area flyfishing. I've heard that the San Lorenzo can be good for steelhead. Would anyone be willing to share where a good access point is? Also, what flies work? What sort of salt water action can be found here? any help would be greatly appreciated. C&R only. Jeremy

I caught one Halibut (18-in 3 pounder) at New Brighton Beach from the surf on June 25. I got my first one from the surf at Palm Beach on June 9 (smaller flattie). I've been really fishing for Perch caught only one Walleyed so far but I'm still on the hunt. Rusty Squirrel Clouser has been the pattern so far. The trip to New Brighton was after hearing about a lot of action from the beach on Halibut (over the week before). There was a lot of floating seaweed that you have to deal with on almost every cast. It seem to have cooled by the 25th and the bait fish seemed to have moved out. I haven't heard any reports since. Anyone else have any Halibut or Perch action on the local beaches? Thanks, Glenn

Fished San Lorenzo yesterday (2/28) from 7 am-11 am. Caught a nice 7-8 lb wild hen, gave me the fight of my life, took a quick picture, and released her (I practice catch and release, even on hatchery fish) Not bad considering this was only my 2nd time steelhead fishing. 2 for 2. Both fish were wild. Probably just beginners luck. Caught her on plastic eggs. Saw one smaller fish caught (4 lbs) at the cement wall. One guy told me he hooked 5 and landed 1 at the same hole I caught my fish. I'll be back next year. Hopefully things just keep getting better. (Time for salmon!!)

well, the season is over. Wednesday morning the river was in great shape, lots of fishermen out there. Fished from 6:15 till 10am with no fish to show for it. Did not see any fish caught. The year's total is a 16"er, couple a little smaller, a 6" and 3"er! Wooley buggers and skunks accounted for all of them. Maybe next year.

Fished the San Lorenzo with Lou Young on Saturday morning, 2/23, in the rain. The river was high and muddy and getting higher. We gave up after 3 hours or so. I went again on Sunday afternoon starting above the Garden of Eden and finishing at the 4 Rocks area. The river was still high, but dropping and clarity was almost 1 foot. Nothing but snags and tangles till I got just below 4 Rocks where I landed a 14" egg eater on roe. There was just too much water in the falls to fish there and the small pockets along the shoreline didn't give up anything. It should be perfect by Wednesday for those of you that can go. Good Luck!

Sunday morning early the river was high (560 cfs) and pretty muddy -- visibility maybe 3 or 4 inches. Noone else on the river or at the Rincon parking lot. No luck fishing with Roostertails or roe.

Lou Young <personalitee@earthlink.net> -- 02/21/01 -- 22:13:22 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98)

Sorry I missed the action last weekend on the SL - The Smith was awesome but water was low and clear. After some rain it picked up. We bank fished. Brad got 2, lost one. I landed one native and lost 3 or 4 others. hard to get used to long line after fishing close in the SL. Lost lots of gear on the rocks. Wednesday on the San Lorenzo - water pretty high and muddy. No fish caught between dawn and noon at 4 Rocks and later nothing at Garden of Eden, fishing along the fast water and in the near pockets.

Elias <eliasp@jps.net> -- 02/17/01 -- 23:48:06 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.7 [en] (Win98; I)

Went steelhead fishing for the 1st time today (2/17) and talk about beginners luck. Went up Hwy 9 until the closure and parked. Fished a hole with a cement wall along one side. Started at about 7 AM. Fished the whole pool from top to bottom with no luck. Was joined by another angler and a companion lady angler. They ended up hooking 4-5 nice fish (6-9 lbs.)and saw them land 3 out of the same spots I had fished. They left and I continued fishing the same spots cause I knew there were fish here. At 10:30 thought I was hung up on a log and pulled for about 1 second before I saw that it was a huge fish (9-10lbs). Major rookie move. As soon as I saw it, it was off my hook and over. Switched baits and kept fishing. At 11 AM, BAMM, no log this time I immediately set the hook and my 8 1/2 ft rod bent over like I've never seen it bend before. For my 1st fish I was excited. Fight the fish was awsome. Anyways, I landed it. A nice wild hen. The two guys there that saw me land it said it was a 9lber.(I think it was between 8-9 lbs) It was HUGE. As you can tell from the length of this report, I'm excited and I think I've caught some sort of "steelhead fever". P.S. I caught on some plastic eggs called "steelhead candy". The fish I lost would've been hooked on a "steelhead slayer"

Wednesday, Feb 14 San Lorenzo. There were about 8 of us at 4 Rocks. Lots of fish stacked up. At one time 5 of us had fish on. At about 8 am everything went flat although Brent had a couple of brief hookups. At 10:28 I hooked a real FISH on a F7 Flatfish. She jumped and ran so fast that the rooster tail off my line was about 12 inches out of the water. She took me over the rapids while I slipped and slid my old body over the rocks downstream. She wrapped the line around a big rock so I had to let the line go slack until I could get close enough to lift it over the rock. She was still on when I reeled up but had rested so whe was off again. I finally landed her at about 10:44 - one of the longest fights I've had from a San Lorenzo Steelhead. The lure hook was hanging from a little bit of lip -another couple of minutes and she'd have self released. Except for the minute or so of slack line, I had a lot of pressure on the fish. She was in the upper end of the 10-lb class, a real beauty.

Fished the 4 Rocks area Saturday morning, 2/10. Landed one 27" wild buck on roe using a #2 circle hook. As advertised the circle hook caught him in the jaw. Lost another large fish and hooked a few egg eaters. Four other large fish were caught (at least that I heard of). It rained off and on and the water was clearly on the rise but visibility was on the order of 1 foot. Off to the Smith next weekend.

If anyone catches a catfish out of the mud flow this weekend, let me know. I may come down Sunday with sludge gear, a led ball and 40lb test! Other than that, I suppose the steelheading is pretty much shot. Fish-off . . . .

I headed to Rincon late saturday afternoon. The river level was good, the visibility was not good (couple inches). Who is tossing the suckers up on the shore? There is a whole school of them now. If is doesn't rain tonight (Saturday), it will be perfect on Sunday.

If anyone sees the SL this evening, please let me know if the rains have blown it out beyond fishability. Unfortunately, I don't live as close to the river as I prefer. Thanks!

Ron Racilis <sanlorenzoriver@hotmail.com> -- 02/04/01 -- 20:23:12 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.61 [en] (Win98; I)

Wow. Starting from the Garden, I fished the SL all Saturday morning and didn't see a soul(not until I got to the weekender's Wall Hole)! Even though I had to fish really hard for my fish, it was very nice the whole time. So thanks, guys, for sleeping in. The fishing report: I put two wild steelies on the bank, both bucks--one about 2lbs, one about 6lbs, a heavy six! Anything happen on Sunday?

Hey Lou, Thanks for the tips on fishing the 4 rock hole, enjoyed catching that 6 lb stealhead, although chasing it downstream through two falls was a little challenging. See you out there next time. P.S. Tom, Hopefully we can coordinate our schedules and head over there together next time.

Tom <tmj@jps.net> -- 01/31/01 -- 16:18:51 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 98; Compaq)

Lou, Looks like I went home to early (11:30)I hooked and lost 2 nice fish in the 8-10 lb range after I saw you in the fall hole. Hope to see you back on the river when we get another good rain.

Jeremy <borgeson@qwestinternet.net> -- 01/30/01 -- 22:23:58 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.5 [en]C-CCK-MCD (Win98; U)

Fished to of the gorge on sat and sunday. On Sat, hooked 8 to 10 pound fish on glo-bug (floating line, black stonefly with size 8 glo bug dropper). Fish rolled, took me into my backing. Chased it downstream where it rolled and then sulked. Tried to horse it in after about 10 min. and pulled the fly out. Devastating since this was my biggest steelhead on a fly. Sunday fished the same water from sun-up to 10 am. Hooked two, landed one eggeater (juve--was releasing milt???). Actually had my guides ice-up (first time on the San Lorenzo). The river was noticebly lower on Sunday, with a greenish tint. It seems to fall more quickly than in past years. On Sat eve fished Buckeye (above Riverside ave): nothing. Looked for fish at Buckeye hole on Sunday afternoon/eve., saw nothing./

Lou Young <personalitee@earthlink.net> -- 01/30/01 -- 21:37:23 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98)

Ron, and others - The sand is coming from the ancient sand dunes upstream on Bean Creek near Scotts Valley. Most seems to come from the Kaiser digs bus some must also surely come from constructions sites around Scotts Valley. It flows down Bean Creek into Zayante and thence into the San Lorenzo just above the dam. When the dam is up, the pumps suck up a lot of water, which causes the sand to build up behind the dam. When the water flow goes down and they deflate the dam the sand washes slowly downstream and settles in the lower river. The last several years we have had generally low flow due to low rainfall (not including El Nino year which is the source of the great fish we are seeing this year) and a lot of pumping upstream and down from the dam and from wells. I've walked the streams from the source of Bean Creek to the San Lorenzo and also from Felton to the Tannery, and it is all sand. I speculate a major effect from the Loma Prieta earthquake in '89. Immediately after the 'quake the water level came up and stayed up for quite a while. After the ruptured acquifers drained, I think a lot of the water now goes back underground.

Ron Racilis <sanlorenzoriver@hotmail.com> -- 01/30/01 -- 08:16:36 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 4.0)

A couple people mentioned all the sand in the river, which I noticed is pretty bad, too. Does anyone know of any landslide activity upstream in a tributary? That'll usually do it. Or maybe the roadwork is pushing sand into the river? Nice to hear a lot of good fish are being caught, anyway. . . .

Mike <bolte@cruzio.com> -- 01/29/01 -- 20:14:58 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98; DigExt)

Hmmm, I (like Dave and Pat) fished this weekend with no luck and although I saw several people fishing, didn't see anything caught either. Worked the Wall hole, Rincon hole and a couple of the smaller holes along that stretch of the river. That was Sunday morning from 6:30 - 10am. Saturday night fished the lower river at the railroad bridge and the Riverside St. bridge with no luck. The deep water under the Riverside bridge is no more -- mostly filled in with sand.

Dave <iluv2fish@hotmail.com> -- 01/29/01 -- 16:09:28 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT; Yahoo-1.0)

Referring to previous post. Where exactly is everyone catching fish? On 1/27 I parked at the HW9 road closure on the Santa Cruz side, at a place with a well worn trail and it might be a state park. After walking down the trail and going upstream, I passed the popular hole with the cement wall, and hiked around the bend to a few deep holes with sandy beaches. I fished here for two hours, and went back to the cement wall hole for an hour or so. I saw about ten people fishing using various techniques, yet I saw only one sucker fish and no steelies.

Lou Young <personalitee@earthlink.net> -- 01/29/01 -- 14:49:19 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98)

Wednesday 1-24 San Lorenzo Pogonip - just one eggeater, but upstream of the rock hole I heard of a 6-lb wild hen. Saturday 1-27 San Lorenzo 4 Rocks - A great day, Brad W had a 9-lb hatchery buck on shrimp, I landed 2 bright 9-lb wild hens on roe and an 8+ lb wild buck on roe - he got airborne and even tail-walked! We left at 11:30 AM by which time we had seen 9-10 fish hooked and most landed. I heard that later in the day there were several more hookups. Shrimp, roe, single eggs, worms, spin-glos with worms or roe all seemed to work. Sunday 1-28 San Lorenzo - I was by myself so I took the easy trail to the cascades above Tunnel Hole - lots of smolts all the way down to 4 Rocks. Lots of people clustered around, and several fish had been hooked on roe, worms, Flatfish, and Little Cleo by the time I got there at 9. The water was pretty clear but I just got small fish on a Flatfish. I hung around and watched the guys using floats hook several nice fish and finally at 12:15 satisfied my soul with a lovely 10-lb class wild hen that put up a good fight, although I don't think the fish are as strong this year as in past years when the water has been higher (e.g. less sand). I got her on my last piece of roe but one. The amount of sand really bothers me- It is very deep so the bulk of the flow is through the sand and the rest runs off the top at high speed, making it hard for the fish to get upstream because there are few holes for them to hold in, and the water gets shallow fast.

Fishing was excellent this weekend. Fished Sunday for 3 hours hooked three landed 1 all bright fish in the 8 - 10 lb class. These fish are wild and full of enegry. My buddy fished Saturday and saw 10 caught. Looks like a banner year.

Fished the San Lorenzo, beginning at the Garden. The water was go-green and great. I hooked about an 8lb hen that was very silver and had a knarly seal scratch on her side. But unfortunately, no sea lice :( The wild steelhead are a really feisty breed in our stream, and their flashing silver scales really glow nicely in green water! I caught it on God's lure: the F7.

Fished the gorge this morning and I caught and landed a beautiful 8-9lb wild steelie. It rolled and jumped several times before I landed him. I was fishing a crawler with a spin'n'glow. My buddy Mike was fishing roe and hooked into a nice trickster. Hot damn, I'm ready for more.

Fished garden of eden for 2 hours, caught nothing, fished henry cowell for 2 hours again nothing, saw one guy hook a steelhead but it got off right away, another guy pulled out a sucker by the tail. 1/13/01 Saturday at Four rocks on the San Lorenzo. Brad W. caught 4 wild fish 4-7 pounds and I hooked 5, landed 3. Smallest was 7 lb native, largest was 9 lb hatchery hen. I kept the hen, as all were caught on roe or shrimp. we each also had several bright egg-eaters. One of the smaller male wild fish I caught was dark with a big red stripe and the beginnings of a kype. Not a down-streamer, just had been in the fresh water for a while. All were pretty skinny. All were caught between 7:15 and 9:45 AM. 1/15/01 Monday. Had Pogonip all to myself, it was darn cold. Water low and clear. I landed a bright and feisty hatchery hen of 4 1/2 to 5 lb in the willows and turned her loose. Also got one small egg-eater out of the rock pool. I left by 10:45 to count harbor seals in the lagoon. Too many. Lou

Sunday morning caught a couple of tiny fish in the Rincon area (6" and maybe 3"). The river was in great shape, but not many fish. sunday eve hooked (and lost)a large fish on a green-butt skunk at the Riverside street bridge.

Jonny <jpwisor@netscape.net> -- 01/14/01 -- 13:24:40 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.73 (Macintosh; I; PPC)

Caught 6 fish in the 8-12" (that's inches, not pounds) range. Kastmasters in the Cowell/ Felton area. Not a bad day if I hadn't been fishing for something larger. Guess the rains didn't bring the monsters in. Also visited Scott Creek, looked like it had broken through during the storm, but it's already low and clear and I had no luck there.

Thanks for the clarification. I was a little suspicious of reports of carp (which are Asian in origin). Does this mean that the fish people are catching are "Squawfish" (golden, with only a dorsal and no adipose fin)? I have not seen any in the San Lorenzo, though I've caught them on the Rogue. Where do they hold? Anyone catch them on flies?

KAOS <big_brothers_watching@yahoo.com> -- 01/06/01 -- 19:36:50 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.73 [en] (Win95; U)

I've noticed a trend in posts refering to CARP. I'd like to clear the air,CARP have barbles(down ward pointing wiskers 2),SUCKERS have downward facing mouths and NO barbles.Regardless what you call'em they should be released unharmed,as they are by-nature scavengers and pose no threat to steelhead.Besides I'd rather catch suckers, than nothing at all....C&R..:)

went up and fished the Mad over New Years. Due to clear water, I switched down to 6 lb test and immediately hooked one on roe. I fought it for 20 minutes and eventually lost it (farmed it!). The MAd was very crowded so went to the Eel. My buddy hooked (released) a nice 3-4 pound native but that's all we got. Just curious. I've seen a few postings that mention carp. Are people really fishing for these things? Or is this slang for another species. I wouldn't even want to touch one! Happy New Years and Good fishing to all.

Fishing the morning of the 18th and 19th from the mouth of the San Lorenzo back to the bridge (railroad). Tried a big muddler and a couple of `rouge river' special streamers. Nothing. There were sea lions cruzing.

11/18/00, fished 6AM-8AM in Henry Cowells Park close to Felton. Hooked and lost two small steelies about 14-16 inches, maybe even the same fish. Whatever happened to Troll Camp is what I want to know.

Can anyone tell me if the mouths of the San Lorenzo and Soquel are open? I am hoping that this rain will open it up for us....

I think it would be nice to have more posts here and I guess I therefore need to make my own contributions. I've been flycasting medium-sized clousers minnows off the north side of the yacht harbor jetty on incoming tides and catching small kelp bass. Best place seems to be inside the jetty near the end. Anyone else shire flyfishing around Santa Cruz?

On Saturday I caught three steelies below the Garden of Eden. Someone better tell the guy with the fish truck to stop stocking the river with 3-4 pound stealhead every Friday night! They're a blast but nothing like the bigger fish they normally stock the river with!

The Water was beutiful, but it seemed most of the fish came through earlier in the week? Hooked and landed one small 3lb fish on Silver Flatfish. Didn't see too many fish caught today not like last Sat.

Fished San Lorenzo on Saturday. Caught 2. Both above highlands park. First on 24 inches. Second one 16 inches. Still waiting for the big ones. I don't know where they are. I went from Ben Lomond all the way to Brookdale and nothing.

Looks like Saturday (Jan. 22) was the day to be on the SL? Thank god I was there, too! I put one on the bank about 4 lb.s (why do they seem so small this year?), and Sunday I slayed one about the same size on Scott Creek. I'm still working on a 15 lb.+ fish, though. Maybe this Saturday that will change?

Josh G <jgon@inreach.com> -- 01/24/00 -- 10:21:28 -- Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98)

Wow, what a day! I thought we were gonna be in trouble without the rain, but it's here and so are the fish. The wait was definitely worth it! Fish the San Lorenzo yesterday, using spinners and fresh roe. Hooked 5, landed 2 one was over 8lbs the other maybe 4 or so. Had one on that was a real brute. It's good to see things right again

Does anyone regularly fish Aptos Creek?! If so, I'm wondering where the main access points and good fishing holes are? Also, how does that stream hold up to heavy rain compared to the San Lorenzo? Thanks.

E.P., I see you recently fished the Gualala. . . that's a nice stream but I have yet to catch a steelie in it. Next time you're up in those parts you should try weting a line in Alder Creek; it's reminds me a lot of the SL and the fishing can be awsome if the conditions are right. The only thing is that it's a bit of a drive for locals around here--but definietly worth the drive, I'd say.

E.P. <toile@pacbell.net> -- 04/05/99 -- 15:49:19 -- Browser: Mozilla/2.02E-PBME (Macintosh; U; 68K)

Fished Gualala river on tuesday and wednesday. We worked the upper part both days. The river was in great shape, glowing green and not too high. Zero fish landed but I hooked one on a puffball/ roe combo just behind a redwood stump that had a nice hole behind it. Saw lots of others in driftboats but didnt here about any fish caught We will try agian next year for sure!

Fished the opening day of salmon season out of santa cruz. We trolled rotary killers on the inside of the soqual hole in 100' to 240'. We only had short strike. We tried mooching around some bait we found at 200' but no action either

Feb. 24. fished Soquel creek hooked a nice fish which I lost after it took me into a willow tree. Also caught two trout of 12" to 14". The water was perfect. Anyone else get out there today?

Lou Young <personalitee@earthlink.net> -- 02/17/99 -- 09:42:40 -- Browser: Mozilla/3.0C-NSCP (Win95; U)

This is my first input to the site. Glad you're doing this, Ernie. 2/13 San Lorenzo 4 Rocks water flow at Felton 370-350 cu ft/sec 12 inch vis. Young Bret landed 2 that I saw, several others caught & released. 2/14 4 Rocks water flow at Felton 350 dropping to 320 14-16 inch vis. Fish caught on roe, spinners, spoons, flatfish. I lost one on a gold Hotshot. Only one kept that I know of, a 10-lb class hatchery hen caught on a silver Hotshot. Fish are big and most (90%) seem to be native fish. Barbless hooks are a bitch when the fish start to roll, I've lost 6 so far this season. 2/15 4 Rocks the water was perfect. Flow at Felton was 290 dropping to 280 by noon. Visibility was more than 18 inches. Relatively few fish were caught from Sand Hole up to square Hole. One big hatchery buck caught in 4 Rocks. I lost another one about 7 pounds. This AM Wednesday 2/17 I just couldn't drag my old body out at 4 AM again (I live in San Jose) and after the rain the river is running at 522 cu ft/sec so I'm sure it's muddy. Don't anyone tell me it wasn't!

2/12/99 Left Santa Cruz Harbor at 8 am. weather was slight overcast, water temp a balmy 52.9 dgrees. Arrived at outer Natural Brigdes Reef at 120 feet. We were fishing with white scampi's tipped white squid. We had a slow pick until about 1-2 pm. The light E breeze subsided along with the current. We proceeded to hook quality Bolina, Vermilion and Canary Rockfish to 2.5 pounds along with a bonus 12 pound lingcod. We wrapped it up at 4 pm with limits for 5 people(myself included) for the best day for the 99 season. Hope the Salmon season does as well. Good Luck Capt. Joe Stoops

Fished the San Lorenzo 2/13. I pretty much agree with Ernie's analysis: pretty muddy water. I didn't hook or land any steelhead (although I caught two pretty hefty sucker fish, which I released). Didn't see any fish roll or swimming in the river (although, admittedly, visibility was not very good). This leads me to believe that the water is fishable and they can see the bait. You need to locate the fish and offer them what they want (whatever that is, presumably roe). One fellow angler said he hooked a fish, but lost it. He also said he heard of three fish caught earlier that day, upstream from where I was fishing (closer to Felton, I presume). Good luck everyone.

2-13-99 I landed my first two steelhead right here in Santa Cruz County. I was fishing a hole in Ben Lomond with a spin and glo when I hooked up two steelhead to eight pounds on an ultra light setup. I think it is great we can drive less than 15 minutes and catch steelhead.

On Sat 12/5, fished at Corralitos Cr. and hooked up w/ a few small fish. Looks like we need more rain. Has anybody had any luck in the main Pajaro R.? Just got back from the West coast of Ireland where I spent 4 days fishing for salmon and seatrout at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in Recess. The weather was lousy (raining sideways most of the time) and the river was way up, but I managed to luck into one gr ilse (small summer run salmon) of about 4 pounds and several small seatrout and browns arount 1/2 pound and smaller. It was nice just to be fishing. The fly the salmon fell to was a silver rat double. I'd like to say we put him back, but as it turns out , I killed him and gave him to my ghillie for his birthday.

I fished the San Lorenzo today. The water was reletively low with about 4'of visibilty. The fishing was pretty tough and not many fish were caught. I was fortunate to catch a 10 to 12 pound fish using a #3 brass Mepps. I originally thought it was a Silver Salmon but now I'm not so sure. Being new to Steelhead fishing, I don't know a good way to distinguish between a Salmon and a Steelhead. Maybe somebody could post some information to help.

I live locally, and i love to steelhead fish. I figured this place could help out immensely since Ernies store has been aroun d, and this is it! Fished the Big Sur River in the beginning of July; It was a five mile hike to the closest legal place to fish (Ventana campground). We packed everything in and spent the night. I wouldn't recommend a day trip as the hike is pretty difficult. The area was absolutely beautiful and the fishing was fun. I was rather dissapinted in the small size of the rainbow's but we still caught a lot of fish. Most were taken on very small (14-20) E.H. Caddis and Parachute Adams. These are very spooky fish because the wate r is so clear so walk lightly! If you want any more info you can e-mail me. Tight lines!

May 1, 1997--Opening day for commerical salmon fishing. My fishing pals (Paul Meyer, Phil Christ & Ed Raphael) and I put in at the Santa Cruz harbor at 6:50 a.m. I expected to see a crowded parking lot--it was only half full--launched in no time at all. I took a 150 degree heading out of the harbor (that put's us just to the left of the one mile bouy) and drove out 7.5 miles. Not many boats including the com guys. Wind died down early and it was a fine day. The bad news is we only had TWO bites. Th e good news is that I had them and landed two 8 lb. salmon. Both fish were hooked at between 40 and 48 pulls in 320' to 350' of water. I used a single hook rig with the line threaded through the anchovy and the hook protruding at the head. A half hitch completes the rigging. With the bigger hooks I find the one hook rig better that the two hook rigs I use to use. My boat's name is "On Location." Give me a call on VHF channel 11. Chuck

Great fishing today (opening day of Salmon Season) in the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay area. Many, many anglers reporting limits, with most fish in the 8-12 pound range!
